Springbrook National Park
Best Of All Outlook
This lookout is actually in Qld but is right on the NSW/QLD border and the views look down into NSW that provides a panoramic view across Mount Warning to Byron Bay and Coolangatta, though the view can also quickly disappear in the fog and mist that can suddenly roll in from the coast.
This plaque is situated just below the outlook deck and helps to define what you are looking at. I have inserted the text below that appears on the plaque.
An impressive outlook – shaped by upheaval!
As Australia drifted northward some 20 to 30 million years ago it passed over one of the Earth’s hot spots which gave rise to volcanic activity. Molten material poured forth from beneath the surface south of here and formed the Mount Warning shield volcano. High rainfall created a myriad of streams and rivers which eroded the volcano into its present shape.
The fertile volcanic soils, high humidity and rainfall provided all the elements needed for subtropical rainforest to thrive. Below you lies Numinbah Nature Reserve, part of the remaining subtropical rainforest, which clothes much of the circular eroded rim as well as the central vent of Mount Warning.
You are standing on the eroded rim of this volcano.
The scenery kept changing as the wind gently blew the clouds around and the sun tried to come out. Another couple on the deck, who had been there the week before, told us how beautiful it had been without a cloud in the sky.
Yes…this place is definitely worth revisiting time and time again.
Beautiful one day, perfect the next.
Mt. Warning…up close with a little help from my ultra zoom lens.
Suddenly the deck was filled with a busload of about 20 Japanese tourists and it was a sight to see. They were blown away by the scenery and were in unison with their ooohs and aaahs. We moved to the back of the deck to let them savour every moment and sat on the in-built wooden bench.
The views were totally lost on a little Japanese boy who took more delight in studying us. He was pretty cute; he knelt on the bench and gazed into our faces with wonder in his eye, which was when we snapped this pic of him, much to his delight.
His mother, concerned that he might be disturbing us tried to draw his attention away but only succeeded in allowing him to offer us Japanese lollies.
Not long after they all left and I took another batch of pics as things looked quite different again, thank goodness for digital photography!
Reluctantly we left the deck to venture back into the cool semi-darkness again…
Next time… I will tell you about a very unique discovery!
